Missouri Individual Income Tax Deadline is April 17

The Missouri Department of Revenue has extended the individual income tax filing deadline this year to Tuesday, April 17 instead of the traditional deadline of April 15. The date was changed as a convenience to Missouri taxpayers, so that the state deadline would be the same as the federal deadline to file tax returns.

The federal Internal Revenue Service is headquartered in the District of Columbia, which celebrates Emancipation Day on April 16. This holiday notes the day in 1862 that President Abraham Lincoln freed more than 3,000 slaves. Because the traditional filing deadline of April 15 falls on a Sunday, and District of Columbia offices are closed for the holiday on Monday, April 16, the IRS moved the federal deadline to Tuesday, April 17. The Missouri Department of Revenue chose to do the same.
