The Identity Confirmation Quiz is a new security measure the Department is implementing to protect taxpayers from identity theft and refund fraud. The quiz will allow taxpayers to quickly and easily verify their identity with the Department.

Factors that prompt returns to be selected are based on our data analysis of information on the tax return. Returns are selected when various factors indicate the possibility of identity fraud.

The information used to populate the quiz comes from a third-party private entity database containing many public and commercial data sources. The data consists of current and historical information about you. All information complies with all local and federal privacy laws.

No. Only those taxpayers who receive a letter will be allowed to take the identity quiz.

Taxpayers who have been selected to take an identity confirmation quiz will receive an Identity Confirmation Quiz letter asking them to complete the quiz within 30 days. The quiz consists of multiple choice questions with answers that help us verify your identity. The quiz is timed and allows you five minutes to complete, once you are past the log in screen.

Once the quiz is complete, taxpayers will know whether or not they passed or failed the quiz.

If a taxpayer passes the quiz, processing of the tax return continues. Taxpayers who fail the first quiz will have the opportunity to take a second quiz with different questions. If the quiz is passed on the second attempt, processing of the tax return will continue.

If a taxpayer fails the quiz twice, the taxpayer will be directed to mail documentation to the Department confirming his or her identity.

Processing of the tax return will not resume until a quiz is passed or the Department receives proper documentation verifying the taxpayer’s identity.

No. The questions to the quiz are based on information associated with the taxpayer whose name is listed on the quiz letter. Answers appropriate to that person should be used when responding to the questions.

You will need the notice number (located at the top right corner of the quiz letter), the social security number of the person on the quiz letter, and the requested refund amount from your Missouri income tax return.

You will not. To protect your identity and your privacy, the Department will not know which questions were answered correctly or incorrectly. The questions and answers are not stored, only the results of the quiz (pass/fail) are stored.

You can take the quiz twice. If you fail both attempts, you will be given instructions for providing additional information to the Department for verification of your identity and tax return. Please click here for more information.

Please refer to the refund line on the Missouri income tax return that was submitted. If the return was completed by a tax preparer, some tax preparers will reduce the refund to account for tax preparation fees. The amount that should be entered is the refund amount on your Missouri return before any fees are deducted.
