3 Steps to Get your Driving Privilege Back
If your Missouri driving privilege was suspended, revoked, or denied and you would like to know how to get it back, follow the three steps below.
- Determine the reason(s) why your driving privilege was suspended, revoked, or denied.
This information is included in the letter(s) you received from the Driver License Bureau when your driving privilege was taken away, or can be found on your current Missouri driver record. You may purchase a copy of your current driver record at any Missouri license office, or call (573) 526-2407. The basic fee for a Missouri driver record is $5.88 per driver record. Other fees may apply. - Note all reasons why your driving privilege was taken away. A reason should be listed on each letter, and all the reasons will be listed on your driver record under "Department Actions." If all the dates show you may now get your driving privilege back, use the chart to find out what forms to file, if any, and how much you must pay. If it is still too soon to get your driving privilege back, you may want to read the information about limited driving privileges.
- If you have two or more reasons why your driving privilege was taken away, look on the chart under each reason to see what forms you need and the total amount to pay. NOTE: You will only need to file one proof of liability insurance form (i.e., SR-22 form; click here for a sample SR-22 form
) even if it is required under all reasons for which you lost your driving privilege.
For Example: If you lost your driving privilege because of points from speeding tickets, you must file an SR-22 insurance form and pay $20. However, if you ALSO lost your driving privilege due to refusing to take an alcohol or drug test, you must file proof you completed a Substance Abuse Traffic Offender Program (SATOP), file an SR-22 insurance form, and pay an additional $45. Altogether, you must pay a total of $65, complete a SATOP, and file an SR-22 insurance form.

How do I file the necessary forms in order to get my driving privilege back?
- When proof of insurance is required, your insurance company may file proof of liability insurance coverage for you on an SR-22 form (click here for a sample SR-22 form
). Submitting your insurance card is sufficient proof of insurance only for Mandatory Insurance Suspensions that do not involve accidents. You need to keep proof of insurance for three years from the date you were eligible to reinstate your driving privilege for not having insurance, or two years from the date you lost your driving privilege for other reasons. - A Substance Abuse Traffic Offenders Program (SATOP) agency will file proof with the Driver License Bureau that you have completed the program. You can also visit the SATOP website for SATOP program locations or call the Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Department of Mental Health, at (573) 522-4020 for more information.
- If you have more than one alcohol offense on your driving record, you must provide proof of installation of an Ignition Interlock Device (IID). The installer of the device will notify the Department of Revenue after installation has been completed. This device must be certified by the Missouri Department of Transportation and installed on any vehicle you operate. You must maintain the device for six months from the reinstatement date. (A court may require you to install an IID if you have one alcohol offense.) Click here for a list of approved ignition interlock devices and installers, or contact Missouri Department of Transportation at 800-800-2358.
- If you must retake the driver examination, the Driver License Bureau will send you a letter allowing retesting after you have paid the amount due and sent in all the required forms.
What is Missouri's Limited Driving Privilege (LDP)?
If you cannot get your driving privilege back, but you need to drive for employment or other important matters, you may apply for a Limited Driving Privilege (LDP). You may get such privileges unless you have certain convictions or losses of driving privilege on your driving record. Some convictions or loss of driving privilege are so serious that an LDP may not be granted. According to Missouri law, the reasons why you cannot get an LDP include, but are not limited to:
- Already received an LDP within the last five-year period.
- Conviction for a felony involving the use of a motor vehicle.
- Conviction for leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident (does not include municipal or county convictions).
- Two or more revocations for refusing a drug or alcohol test.
- Suspension, revocation, cancellation, or disqualification of commercial driving privileges (Note: only a non-commercial limited driving privilege may be issued in this case).
- Conviction for driving a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs or controlled substances.
- Multiple convictions involving alcohol or narcotic drugs.
- Revocation for failure to pass a driving and/or medical examination as required by the Director of Revenue.
- Suspension for an unsatisfied motor vehicle accident judgment (until payment has been made and/or compliance has been met).
- Suspension for failure to pay ticket(s) in Missouri or in another state (until payment has been made and/or compliance has been met).
- Less than 30 days have been served on a suspension/revocation that resulted from a conviction for driving while intoxicated (DWI) or driving with excessive blood alcohol concentration (BAC).
- Less than 90 days have been served on a revocation for refusal to submit to drug or alcohol test .
- Less than 30 days have been served on a Department of Revenue administrative alcohol suspension for driving a motor vehicle with a BAC over the legal limit.
- The entire period of revocation has not been served on a Department of Revenue administrative alcohol revocation for driving a motor vehicle with a BAC over the legal limit.
NOTE: If you have more than one alcohol offense, proof of installation of an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) is required prior to an LDP being issued. The IID must be maintained for the duration of the LDP. (A court may require you to install an IID if you have one alcohol offense.)
How do I apply for an LDP?
- You need to file an Application for Limited Driving Privilege (DOR-4595
). - If you do not currently have proof of liability insurance on file with the Driver License Bureau, you will need to have your insurance company provide such proof (i.e. SR-22 form; click here for a sample SR-22 form
) or submit a copy of the form with your application. You must maintain the device for the duration of the Limited Driving Privilege. (A court may require you to install an IID if you have one alcohol offense.) Click here for a list of approved ignition interlock devices and installers, or contact Missouri Department of Transportation at 800-800-2358.
Your application will be reviewed within approximately five working days and an order granting or denying an LDP will be sent to you. Directions appear on the application for faxing or mailing the application. If you have any questions about the LDP application, please call (573) 751-4475, or email dlbmail@dor.mo.gov.
You may also apply for an LDP by filing a petition for such privileges with the associate court in the county where you live or work. A filing fee and court costs will be required when filing your petition. If you have a 5 or 10-year denial, you MUST petition the court to apply for an LDP.
What is an Ignition Interlock Device (IID)?
An Ignition Interlock Device (IID) is a handheld breath-testing device that is connected to the vehicle's ignition, horn, and headlights. To start the vehicle, a driver must breathe into the device without registering a blood alcohol concentration (BAC).
General Requirements
- Individuals with more than one alcohol offense on their driving record, must have an IID installed prior to:
- reinstatement of their driving privileges OR
- issuance of a Limited Driving Privilege (LDP) or Restricted Driving Privilege (RDP).
- The IID must be maintained for six months following the reinstatement date, and the driver is required to report to a certified IID vendor (see below) each month for maintenance to ensure the device is working properly.
- Failure to maintain the device during the six-month period will result in a re-suspension of driving privileges. The applicant will then be required to do the following before driving privileges can be reinstated:
- have the device serviced / reinstalled (the certified installer will send proof of service or reinstallation to the Driver License Bureau) and
- pay a $20 reinstatement fee.
NOTE: In addition to the driver licensing requirements explained above, a court may impose other requirements, such as a period longer than six months. If a driver is convicted for failing to have an IID installed as required by law, their driving privilege will be revoked for one year. A second offense requires driving privileges to be revoked for five years.
Device Installers
- The IID installed must be certified and approved by the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT). The installer of the device will notify the Department of Revenue after installation has been completed, or upon any failure to maintain the device.
- Click here for a list of approved ignition interlock devices and installers, or contact Missouri Department of Transportation at 800-800-2358.
