Real ID Rules and Regulations Recently Released

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently released the final rule establishing minimum security standards for state-issued driver licenses and identification cards. In that rule, they announced that effective May 11, 2008, Federal agencies cannot accept drivers’ licenses or identification cards for official purposes unless a State has requested and obtained an extension of the compliance date from DHS.

The Missouri Department of Revenue (Department) has requested an extension and received approval from DHS. Therefore, for the purposes of accessing Federal facilities, boarding aircraft, and entering nuclear power plants, federal agencies will continue to accept the current Missouri driver and nondriver license documents until December 31, 2009. The Department is continuing to review the rules to determine additional requirements and impact to Missouri. Details on the rule can be found at www.dhs.gov
