Social security numbers no longer allowed as driver license identifiers
Federal law requires states to make change
JEFFERSON CITY – Beginning December 19, 2005, a social security number may no longer be used as a license number on a Missouri driver license. The Department of Revenue (department) and its contract license offices statewide will bring about the change on Monday.
The restriction on the use of social security numbers is a result of a federal law that prohibits the department from issuing a driver license, permit, or nondriver license (ID card) using the social security number as the license number. A system-generated license number will be assigned to all new applicants and renewal or duplicate applicants who currently use their social security number as a license number.
Since July 1, 2005, Missourians obtaining or renewing a driver license or nondriver license are required to show proof of lawful presence, identity, and residency. Details of “Show Me Proof” are available at the department’s website at www.dor.mo.gov.
For a complete list of license offices and hours, please visit the department’s website at www.dor.mo.gov/mvdl/offloc/. The department’s call center is available to assist customers from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at (573) 751-2730.
