Taxpayers Checking Tax Refund Status in Record Numbers

        JEFFERSON CITY – When the Missouri Department of Revenue created a new toll-free telephone line to let taxpayers gain information about their tax returns and refunds, it expected the number of calls to increase. Today, the department announced the number of taxpayers using the phone to get information about a tax return has increased by 106 percent – more than double the calls – over last year.

        The phone numbers to check the status of a tax return or refund are (866) 433-7259 (toll-free) or (573) 526-8299 (toll).  To access information, taxpayers must know the first social security number listed on their return and the expected refund or amount due.

        Taxpayers so far this year have accessed tax return information by phone 58,118 times, more than double the 28,208 calls made last year at this time.

        Meanwhile, taxpayers’ use of the department’s online tracking system has increased by 12.5 percent. Last year at this time, taxpayers accessed tax return information online 71,124 times, while 80,031 taxpayers have used the online method this year.

        To use the online system, go to www.dor.mo.gov and click “Where’s My Tax Return?” on the right side of the page.  Like the phone method, the taxpayer will enter the first social security number listed on the return and the expected refund or amount due.
