Emissions Inspection Exemption Available for Low-Mileage Vehicles in St. Louis Area
JEFFERSON CITY – A Senate Bill 583 provision passed in 2006 goes into effect August 28, 2007, giving low-mileage vehicles a pass on vehicle emissions inspections.
Motor vehicles driven less than 12,000 miles between biennial safety inspections are exempt from the emissions inspection (Section 643.315). To be eligible for the exemption, a vehicle owner must have the vehicle’s previous safety inspection (from two years ago), and the paperwork must show that the vehicle has been driven fewer than 12,000 miles in the last two years.
The vehicle must visit an approved safety inspection station for a safety inspection and to receive the emissions inspection exemption. The customer will receive a waiver showing the vehicle is exempt from an emissions inspection at this renewal. This should be presented to a motor vehicle license office along with a passing safety inspection, proof of paid property taxes, and proof of insurance.
For additional information on renewing or obtaining a vehicle registration, please visit the Missouri Department of Revenue website at www.dor.mo.gov and click on “Motor Vehicle” on the left sidebar.
