Brookfield, Butler, Camdenton, Forsyth, Houston & Montgomery City License Offices Are Latest To Be Put Up for Bid

As Gov. Jay Nixon’s effort to improve customer service and accountability in Missouri state government continues, interested citizens and groups will be able to bid on the management of six more local motor vehicle license offices.

“Although a few license offices are currently run by civic groups, most license offices in the past were given away to people based solely on their political connections,” said Gov. Nixon.  “Now, any person or group can bid to operate an office, and they have to tell us in advance exactly how they will run the office and how efficiently they can perform.  This new, non-partisan scrutiny of license office operations will undoubtedly benefit Missouri citizens.”

The governor also noted that the Missouri General Assembly recently approved legislation that will permanently put his bidding process into state law.

“There’s no turning back from the progress we’ve made,” Gov. Nixon said.

The six offices that have been put up for bid this week are Brookfield, Butler, Camdenton, Forsyth, Houston and Montgomery City.  Bidders will have five weeks (or until July 7) to respond to bid proposals administered by the Office of Administration (OA).  Teams from the Missouri Department of Revenue will evaluate the bids.

Karen King Mitchell, director of the Department of Revenue, said the competitive nature of the bidding process has resulted in quality proposals from people who want to manage the offices.

“The strongest bids have been put forth by people with relevant experience and who demonstrate that they will be able to provide efficient, quality service for their customers,” Mitchell said.  “It’s also important for bidders to be thorough in answering all of the questions in the bid proposal.  Incomplete or vague answers are not viewed favorably by the evaluation teams.”

Common transactions that take place at local license offices include renewing or applying for a driver’s license, renewing or applying for registration on motor vehicles, boats and outboard motors, and applying for titles and paying sales taxes on these units.
