How do I change my name when I get married?

Motor Vehicle, Boat/Vessel, and Outboard Motor Title & Registration

In order to change your name on a motor vehicle registration, boat/vessel or outboard motor registration, you will need to apply for a new title in your new name. This may be completed by submitting a completed and signed application for title, the original title,  acceptable documentation of your legal name change, the appropriate title fee ($8.50 for motor vehicles and trailers; $7.50 for boats/vessels; $5.00 for outboard motors) and a $2.50 processing fee.

The information and forms are available by regular mail. Please send your name and address with your request for "Name Change Documents" to: mvbmail@dor.mo.gov.

Your local license office also has the forms and information to assist you.

Driver License

To change the name that appears on your Missouri driver license, take acceptable documentation of your legal name change to a Missouri driver license office after you get married, divorced, etc. You may then apply and pay for a duplicate driver license with your new name. You will be asked to retake your photo and sign the document. If your Missouri driver license is within 6 months (184 days) of expiring, you may be eligible to renew your driver license early (instead of just receiving a duplicate of the old license).

Acceptable Documents for Proof of Name Change

If you have questions about the acceptability of the documentation you have, please email: dlbmail@dor.mo.gov.
