Biennial Registrations

Effective July 1, 2000, Missourians now have the option to register their motor vehicles every two years rather than every year. The required registration fee for the biennial license has been doubled, to ensure no loss in revenues to Missouri's state highways, and Missourians still have the option of renewing their vehicle registrations every year. All "even" model year vehicles have the option during even years and "odd" model year vehicles will have the option during odd years. (Example: A 1998 model year vehicle has the option after July 1, 2000, and a 1999 model year vehicle will have the option after January 1, 2001). If the majority of Missourians take advantage of the two year renewal option, there will be a dramatic decrease in the amount of time you will have to wait in line at your local license office. In addition to two year registrations, all motor vehicle safety inspections will be valid for two years.

Beginning July 1, 2000, based on the model year of the vehicle, a vehicle safety inspection is good for two registration years, unless the vehicle is sold during that two-year inspection period. All "even" model year vehicles must be inspected during even years and "odd" model year vehicles must be inspected during odd years. (Example: After July 1, 2000, a 1998 year model vehicle must be inspected in the year 2000 and a 1999 model year vehicle is not required to be inspected until the year 2001).
