Department of Revenue staff reflects on time at 2018 Missouri State Fair

JEFFERSON CITY

Director Joel Walters and staff are today reflecting on their time spent representing the Department of Revenue at the 116th Missouri State Fair, which concluded Sunday in Sedalia. This was the first year the Department had a presence at the fair.

“I think I can safely speak for all staff who worked at the DOR’s state fair booth when I say it was a great experience that couldn’t have gone better,” said Director of Strategy and Communications Anne Marie Moy. “Although staff have worked at the fair in prior years to help collect sales tax, the Department itself had never had its own booth. And that was such a shame because it meant we were missing out on a fantastic opportunity to interact with the citizens we serve every day in a unique setting.

“This year, we were able to speak directly to our customers about all the great things the Department is doing and how hard we’re working to enhance the customer experience for all citizens and businesses in Missouri. And through our booth, we were also able to introduce citizens to the new look of the Department, and that was really special.”

In addition to various informational materials and videos, many fairgoers took advantage of the Department’s “License for Fun” driver license photo booth, posting their snapshots to social media.

Morgan Fulks, who helped plan the Department’s first state fair appearance and worked the booth, had this to say about the experience: “The state fair has always been a special place for my family, and we’ve been going for the last 14 years. So when Director Walters began talking about the DOR having a booth there, I jumped at the opportunity to help. I think it was a very successful first run. We got to talk to customers and answer their questions face-to-face, and everyone loved the driver license photo booth.”

Members of the Department’s leadership team, the military liaison and staff from the Motor Vehicle and Driver License Division, Taxation Division and General Counsel’s Office all had the opportunity to meet with citizens and help answer their questions.

Melody Reichel, a manager with the Motor Vehicle Division, spent two days working at the fair: “Helping citizens at the Department’s state fair booth was a wonderful experience. I love being able to help people in any way I can, but it’s really great when you can do it face-to-face. I’ll definitely be volunteering to help again next year.”

Director Walters concluded: “Thank you to all DOR staff who worked so hard to put a great booth together and all those who went to Sedalia and represented us so well. On behalf of the entire Department, we appreciate every visitor who stopped by our booth, whether it was to ask a question or simply say hello. We look forward to seeing you again in 2019.”
