The Department has implemented increased security measures to protect taxpayers from identity theft and refund fraud.  The Department will ask some taxpayers to confirm their identities by completing an Identity Confirmation Quiz.  Those selected to take the quiz will receive a letter from the Department following submission of their tax return.  The quiz is taken on a secure website and should only take a few minutes to complete.  If the taxpayer passes the quiz, the Department will continue processing the tax return.

To login and take the Identity Confirmation Quiz, taxpayers will need the following:

  1. Notice Number from the quiz letter
  2. Social Security Number of the person on the quiz letter
  3. Requested refund amount from the Missouri tax return

After the taxpayer successfully enters the above criteria, a short four-question quiz will appear.  Taxpayers will have 5 minutes to answer the questions. The quiz is based on information associated with the taxpayer listed on the quiz letter. Answers appropriate to that person should be used in responding to the questions.  At the end of the quiz, taxpayers will see a confirmation screen if they successfully answer the questions.  Taxpayers who fail the quiz will be provided further instructions.

Individuals who do not have access to the Internet and want to take the quiz over the phone will need to call the Department at 573-751-3505.

If you received a quiz letter and have not filed a Missouri return for the tax year referenced in the letter, please contact the Department at 573-522-4866 or by email at idtheft@dor.mo.gov.
