What is the process to get a CCW endorsement?
- The sheriff or sheriff’s designee issues a Concealed Carry Certificate of Qualification and enters corresponding information in the Missouri Uniform Law Enforcement System (MULES). The CCW endorsement cannot be added until the information has been accurately entered in MULES.
- The applicant brings the Concealed Carry Certificate of Qualification form to a license office.
- The office personnel will verify the authenticity of the Concealed Carry Certificate of Qualification. If the Concealed Carry Certificate of Qualification information has not been accurately entered in MULES, the CCW endorsement application will be denied and the applicant must return to the law enforcement agency that issued the Concealed Carry Certificate of Qualification.
- The driver license applicant surrenders his or her current license, and takes the vision and road sign recognition tests, if applicable.
- The applicant pays for a new, renewal or duplicate driver or nondriver license.
- A driver or nondriver license with a CCW endorsement is issued to the qualifying individual.
- The CCW endorsement expires three years from the issue date of the CCW Certificate of Qualification. The CCW expiration date is noted on the driver or nondriver license.
When can I get a driver license or nondriver license (ID card) with a Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) endorsement?
Individuals issued a Concealed Carry Certificate of Qualification have seven days from the date issued to apply for a new/renewal/duplicate driver license or nondriver license showing the CCW endorsement (571.101, RSMo ).
How much does the endorsement cost?
When you apply for a driver license with a CCW endorsement, you will be charged only the standard driver license fee(s) to produce the new, renewal, or duplicate driver license based on the expiration date of your current document of the same type. The CCW endorsement does not have an additional cost.
When you apply for a nondriver license (identification card) with a CCW endorsement, you will be charged $5.50 ($3.00 transaction fee and $2.50 processing fee). The expiration date of the nondriver license will be equal to the expiration date of the CCW endorsement (typically three years with a new or renewal Certificate of Qualification).
Why do I have to go to the sheriff or sheriff’s designee if the MULES record is incomplete?
If the record is incomplete or inaccurate, only the sheriff or sheriff’s designee can make necessary changes. The sheriff’s office, by statute has the authority to approve and update the CCW Certificate of Qualification records. For identity security purposes, the Department’s automated license system will not allow issuance of a CCW endorsement if the MULES record is inaccurate or incomplete.
Why do I have to get a new Certificate of Qualification when I lose my license or change my name?
The Concealed Carry law creates these requirements. The law requires you to notify the sheriff or sheriff’s designee within seven days if your driver or nondriver license containing a CCW endorsement is lost or destroyed. The sheriff or sheriff’s designee will reissue a Certificate of Qualification with a new control number within three working days of the notification. You must then take the Certificate of Qualification to your local license office to apply for a driver or nondriver license with a CCW endorsement.
If you change your name, the law also requires you to furnish proof of your name change to the Department and the sheriff or sheriff’s designee within 30 days. The sheriff or sheriff’s designee who issued the original Certificate of Qualification will issue a certificate with your new name and new control number after verification of the name change. You must then apply for a driver or nondriver license containing your new name at your local license office.
Will I get a notice from the department to renew my endorsement?
Yes. The department will send out a notice for renewal for the endorsement. The notice will be mailed 30 days prior to the month of CCW endorsement expiration.
What happens when a CCW endorsement expires before the license?
The driver or nondriver license may be valid after the CCW endorsement expires based on the expiration date of the driver or nondriver license. If you wish to maintain a current CCW endorsement on your license, you will need to renew your Certificate of Qualification through your local sheriff or sheriff’s designee and apply for an updated driver or nondriver license every three years to keep a current CCW endorsement on your driver or nondriver license. If your driver or nondriver license does not expire within the next 184 days, you will pay applicable fees and receive a duplicate driver or nondriver license.
Effective August 29, 2011 a nondriver license with a CCW endorsement will be issued with an expiration date that will be the same as the expiration date of the CCW endorsement. This date is determined as three years from the issue date of the CCW Certificate of Qualification, as posted by the sheriff or sheriff’s designee. This change does not affect driver licenses issued with a CCW endorsement. Due to other licensing edits, a driver license expiration date will differ from the expiration date of the CCW endorsement.
I just moved to Missouri and I have a CCW qualification from my previous state of residence. What are the requirements for me to get a Missouri CCW endorsement?
Missouri law does not allow for a CCW qualification or endorsement to be transferred from another state. If you wish to obtain the CCW endorsement in Missouri, you must complete the certification and background check requirements conducted by this state. Contact your local sheriff or sheriff agency for application details.
I just moved (from one Missouri address to another Missouri address) and I have a CCW endorsement. Am I required to notify anybody or apply for an updated driver license or nondriver license?
CCW endorsement holders are required to notify the Department of Revenue and the sheriff of the old and new county of residence within thirty (30) days of completing a change in permanent residence address. Applying for a duplicate driver or nondriver license to have the residence address updated on the actual printed document is optional.
