Department of Revenue News Release
February 03, 2009License Offices Go Up For Bid in Ferguson, Florissant, Independence, West Plains, St. Joseph & New London
JEFFERSON CITY – Gov. Jay Nixon’s plan to bid out the management of local license offices continued today with bid proposals being announced for six geographically diverse Missouri offices.
The six offices that were put up for bid today are in Ferguson, Florissant, Independence, West Plains, St. Joseph and New London. Bid proposals for 18 other Missouri offices have been put up for consideration since January 13.
“All across the state people are realizing that the old patronage system is coming to an end, and that these local license offices will now go to those who will deliver the best service to Missourians,” Gov. Nixon said.
In the past, the management of the local offices – where citizens obtain their driver licenses and license plates – was awarded to political supporters of the governor. Under Gov. Nixon’s plan that was implemented earlier this year, individuals or groups will have five weeks to respond to a detailed proposal that will indicate how a bidder plans to make the office efficient, secure and customer-friendly. The bids will be evaluated by the Department of Revenue and the Office of Administration, and the bidder that best meets the criteria will be awarded the right to run the office.
“Getting the most qualified people who will run the offices in the most efficient and courteous way is our top goal,” said Karen King Mitchell, the director of the Department of Revenue.
