Refund Information
Request for Refund of Taxes or Fees Paid on Vehicle or Marine (Form 426)
Important: To avoid delays or rejection, submit all required documented listed under the applicable situation.
Required documents:
- Completed and signed Form 426
- Missouri Title Receipt - a legible copy for the unit that was purchased showing taxes and fees paid
- Completed and signed Bill of Sale (Form 1957) or Notice of Sale (Form 5049) for the sold unit
- Proof of ownership from your previous state (if sold on an out-of-state title) (i.e., original registration receipt or certified title record from your previous state
Required documents:
- Completed and signed Form 426
- Missouri Title Receipt - a legible copy for the unit that was purchased showing taxes and fees paid
- Total loss affidavit from insurance company (signed and notarized/certified)
- If uninsured: two appraisals and a police report
- Proof of ownership from your previous state (if sold on an out-of-state title) (i.e., original registration receipt or certified title record from your previous state
Required documents:
- Completed and signed Form 426
- Missouri Title Receipt - a legible copy for the unit that was purchased showing taxes and fees paid.
- Non-interest statement from the lienholder (if applicable)
- Statement from seller/dealer confirming the sale was rescinded, including:
- Date the unit was returned
- Amount of purchase price returned to buyer
- Reason the unit was returned
Required documents:
- Completed and signed Form 426
- Missouri Title Receipt - a legible copy for the unit that was purchased showing taxes and fees paid
- Proof of correct residence location (one of the following)
- Tax Waiver
- Statement from county/city collector
- Personal property tax receipt

- Supporting documents to prove the penalties should not have been assessed or were assessed incorrectly

- Missouri Registration Receipt - a legible copy for the unit that was purchased showing fees paid
- Unused plates or tabs must be surrendered to receive a refund; they may be mailed to the Missouri Department of Revenue to the address under “Submit Your Refund Request” or Form 2578 can be completed by a Missouri license office to verify the plate/tab was surrendered to them.

- Missouri Title Receipt - a legible copy for the unit that was purchased showing taxes and fees paid
- Payment Receipt – showing the excess fees
- Front and back copy of the check provided at the license office
Required documents (Customer Filing):
- Completed and signed Form 426
- Missouri Title Receipt - a legible copy for the unit that was purchased showing taxes and fees paid
- Manufacturer statement (on letterhead) confirming:
- Vehicle was a “buy back”
- No refund of taxes/fees by the manufacturer
Required documents (Manufacturer Filing):
- Completed and signed Form 426
- Missouri Title Receipt - a legible copy for the unit that was purchased showing taxes and fees paid
- Manufacturer statement (on letterhead) confirming:
- Vehicle was a “buy back”
- Amount of taxes/fees refunded
Required documents:

- Missouri Title Receipt - a legible copy for the unit that was purchased showing taxes and fees paid
- Proof of out-of-state taxes paid (purchase agreement or buyer’s order)
