Eldon License Agent To Close Local Office; Alternatives Available Until New Office Opens

ELDON – The Eldon motor vehicle and driver license office will close at the end of the business day on Friday, March 20.

The office, located at 401 West Fourth St., will close at 5 p.m. Friday.  The agent in charge of the office, Edwina Slone, has opted to close the office for personal reasons.

Common transactions that are conducted at local license offices include renewing or applying for a driver’s license, renewing or applying for registration on motor vehicles, boats and outboard motors, and applying for titles and paying sales taxes on these units.

“It’s always unfortunate when an agent decides to close an office,” said Karen King Mitchell, director of the Department of Revenue. “I know it will inconvenience some customers for a short time, but we are working to alleviate the problem. We have locations in nearby towns, and many people have the option of renewing their license plates online.  The department might also send personnel with portable computers to Eldon in the near future to process some license plate renewals.”

Another area office is located in Vienna. A complete listing of offices, including directions and office hours, is available online at http://dor.mo.gov/mvdl/offloc/.  Customers who were notified that their personalized license plates were available at the Eldon office can pick up their plates on or after March 25th at the Versailles office.

To renew most motor vehicle license plates, many citizens of Miller, Moniteau, Cole, Morgan, Camden and Maries counties can utilize the Department of Revenue’s Missouri Online Registration Exchange (MORE) to process license plate renewals online.  The web address is http://plates.mo.gov/.  Customers can’t use the site to obtain driver licenses or renew personalized license plates, but it is an option for typical license plate renewals. The department’s call centers are also available to answer questions about MORE and other related issues.  The centers are open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  For motor vehicle/license plate issues, you can call (573) 526-3669, and for answers to driver license questions, you can call (573) 751-1887.

Mitchell stressed that the office closing was not due to the new bidding process involving all 183 of the state’s local license offices.

“Governor Jay Nixon’s proposal to let people present plans to run license offices more efficiently is working well,” Mitchell said.  “The current agent in Eldon chose not to bid to operate the office in the future.”

Bidding on the Eldon license office is open until March 31. Mitchell said the choosing of the new agent will be expedited to reduce the amount of time that the office is closed.
