Nevada License Agent To Close Local Office; Alternatives Available Until New Office Opens

NEVADA – The Nevada motor vehicle and driver license office will close at the end of the business day on Thursday, July 30, and re-open when a new license office contract agent has been chosen to replace the retiring agent.

The office, located at 113 S. Main St., will close at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, July 30.  The office will also be closed this Saturday, July 25, but will re-open for normal business hours (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) for the following week.

The agent in charge of the office, Tera Balk Elliott, has opted to retire.  The office will re-open after the Missouri Department of Revenue has chosen a new agent to replace Elliott.  A specific date for re-opening has not been determined.

Common transactions that are conducted at local license offices include renewing or applying for a driver license, renewing or applying for registration on motor vehicles, boats and outboard motors, and applying for titles and paying sales taxes on these units.

“It’s unfortunate when an office has to temporarily close,” said Alana M. Barragán-Scott, acting director of the Department of Revenue. “I know it will inconvenience some customers for a short time, but we are working to alleviate the problem. We have locations in nearby towns, and many people have the option of renewing their license plates online.”

Customers who need to conduct business at a motor vehicle license office are encouraged to visit the following nearby locations.  Address, phone numbers, and business hours are listed below.

Customers who have been notified that their personalized license plates are available at the Nevada office, and who can’t get to the Nevada office by July 30, can pick up their plates on or after Tuesday, August 4, at the Lamar office.

To renew most motor vehicle license plates, many citizens of Vernon, Bates and St. Clair counties can use the Department of Revenue’s Missouri Online Registration Exchange (MORE) to process license plate renewals online.  The web address is http://plates.mo.gov/.  Customers can’t use the site to obtain driver licenses or renew personalized license plates, but it is an option for typical license plate renewals.

The department’s call centers are also available to answer questions about MORE and other related issues.  The centers are open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  For motor vehicle/license plate issues, you can call (573) 526-3669, and for answers to driver license questions, you can call (573) 751-1887.

Barragán-Scott stressed that the office closing was not due to the new bidding process involving all 183 of the state’s local license offices.

“Governor Jay Nixon’s proposal to let people present plans to run license offices more efficiently is working well,” she said.  “There are four bidders for the Nevada office, and the department is close to selecting the best proposal.”
