Department of Revenue News Release
May 26, 2009Competitive Bids Will Determine Management of Buffalo, Clinton, Cuba, Pineville, Sullivan & Versailles License Offices
The management contracts of six more local motor vehicle license offices were put up for bid today as part of Gov. Jay Nixon’s plan to make state government more responsive, efficient and accountable.
“When people want to get a driver’s license or their license plates, they don’t care if the local license office is run by a Democrat, Republican or independent – and neither do I,” Gov. Nixon said. “What’s important is that customers are treated well and that the office is run in a professional manner. This bidding process helps achieve those goals.”
The governor also noted that the Missouri General Assembly recently approved legislation that will permanently put his bidding process into state law.
“There’s no turning back from the progress we’ve made,” Gov. Nixon said.
The six offices that have been put up for bid this week are Buffalo, Clinton, Cuba, Pineville, Sullivan and Versailles. Bidders will have five weeks (or until June 30) to respond to bid proposals administered by the Office of Administration (OA). Teams from the Missouri Department of Revenue will evaluate the bids.
Karen King Mitchell, director of the Department of Revenue, noted some of the criteria that the department teams use when considering bids.
“The teams will be looking at a bidder’s plans for customer service, the hours of operation, the accessibility and security of the office location, the past business or license office experience of the office staff, and whether some of the revenues will be returned to the state,” Mitchell said.
Common transactions that take place at local license offices include renewing or applying for a driver’s license, renewing or applying for registration on motor vehicles, boats and outboard motors, and applying for titles and paying sales taxes on these units.
